Augsburg College invites applications for a Dean of Global Education, with a proposed start date in Summer 2014. Set in a vibrant, diverse urban neighborhood and centered on student success, Augsburg is deeply committed to civic engagement, experiential learning, undergraduate research, and global education. The College embraces a distinctive vision of global learning rooted in cross-cultural understanding, social justice, environmental stewardship, and critical thinking. Consistent with these commitments, we seek a Dean who can engage diverse constituents in strengthening global education at Augsburg in the 21st century, who can lead and manage international initiatives, partnerships, programs, and off-campus sites: the Dean will provide visionary, strategic, and collaborative leadership for the Center for Global Education, Augsburg Abroad, internationalization at home, and faculty-led off-campus programs. Both on and off campus, the Dean will oversee international operations and budgets, explore new partnerships and opportunities, and promote intercultural understanding and off-campus learning. Reporting directly to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, the Dean must be able to work effectively with faculty to deepen global learning in the curriculum. In collaboration with other departments, the Dean will also have the opportunity to shape strategic recruitment and retention of international students.
A Master’s degree in a related field with at least ten years’ experience in global education required.
Competitive candidates will have, ideally, a doctorate in a relevant field or a comparable combination of education, accomplishments, and experience.
Candidates should also provide evidence of advanced intercultural competence and effective leadership in international and diverse settings. Other desired credentials include successful program development and management, leadership in strategic planning, experience developing new opportunities, and understanding of legal and risk management. Significant budget experience is necessary; excellent communication and organizational skills are essential; and proficiency in more than one language is preferred. Experience managing international sites and staff, as well as recruitment for institutional programs available to other colleges, universities, and groups is also preferred. Some college-level teaching, grant writing experience, and presentations and/or publications in global education is desirable.
Augsburg College offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and nine graduate degrees to approximately 3,500 students of diverse backgrounds. With a student/faculty ratio of 15:1, the College emphasizes close interaction between students and faculty. Augsburg embraces its Lutheran heritage, which comprises both religious and intellectual components, supports the College’s commitment to interfaith dialogue, and provides a diverse student body with opportunities to explore personal faith traditions as well as those of others. Augsburg’s commitment to diversity is reflected in the student body: for the past four years, students of color comprised nearly one-third of the first-year class.
Augsburg's main campus is located in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, one of the most culturally rich areas in the Twin Cities. Incorporating its urban setting into campus life, deepening its commitment to inclusion, serving others, and vocational inquiry are hallmarks of the College. The College actively pursues strong relationships with new and recent immigrant communities, while maintaining active connections with its Norwegian roots, though such events as the annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum, which the College co-hosts. With approximately 1,000 students living on campus, Augsburg engages students in a wide range of co-curricular activities, partnerships with local communities, cultural opportunities on and off campus, and a robust NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics program. We are dedicated to an atmosphere of collaboration that epitomizes co-creation and effective partnerships.
Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until April 15, 2014. Interested applicants should apply online and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names of professional references. Candidates selected for hire will be subject to a background check and must submit transcripts. Questions may be directed by email to email@example.com.
